Why the Nurse Wellness Program got started

Dr. Kelly started our Nurse Wellness Program for personal reasons. Here is what he said about giving back to nurses:

“I was born premature and underweight and NICU nurses in North Bay were there for me and my worried parents. When I was nine, pediatric nurses in Belleville cared for me for most of a summer after I was hit by a car. And more recently, ER nurses in Toronto helped me through a heart attack and recovery.

Then in 2025, I heard the story of an experienced NICU nurse who was close to burnout. She cared deeply about her patients and her team — and she was running on empty. She’d tried several therapists, looking for someone who understood nursing life and could make space for what she needed to talk about: the responsibility, the grief of too many deaths, frustrations with management, team tensions, and the strain of shift work. The search for a therapist took months and it alone was draining, adding to what she already had on her plate. Eventually, she found the right fit.

But it shouldn’t take months of trial and error for a nurse to find care that fits.

That’s why we built the Nurse Wellness Program at The Mindfulness Clinic — to make it easier for nurses to connect with therapists who understand healthcare culture and can offer practical support and go deeper when that’s what’s needed.

Several therapists on my team grew up in nursing families or have close ties to healthcare. When I asked if they wanted to do this work, they didn’t hesitate. So, we built the Nurse Wellness Program.”

Meet Our Nurse Wellness Therapists

Not every therapist understands what it’s like to work in a hospital. The therapists in the Nurse Wellness Program do. Each of them has a meaningful personal connection to nursing and healthcare, and each has dedicated a significant part of their clinical career to supporting people in helping professions.

The program operates under the clinical supervision of Dr. Paul Kelly, Psychologist and Founder of The Mindfulness Clinic. All sessions are virtual and scheduled with shift workers in mind.
