Quit Smoking Treatment
Smoking tobacco can have serious health consequences. If you smoke you increase your risk of dying from lung cancer, throat cancer, heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and other problems. No level of tobacco smoking is safe or inconsequential. If you are reading this page you have probably already tried to quit smoking at least once. Did you know that most people attempt to quit seven times before they finally succeed. During these attempts their motivation to quit increases and they probably learn and try out new strategies.
How we can help you to quit smoking:
The good news is that it is completely possible to stop smoking even if you have smoked several packs per day for years. Nicotine is very addictive though so a successful plan to quit smoking has to deal with nicotine withdrawal symptoms as well as the psychological barriers to stopping.
If you come to our Clinic our therapists can help you design a smoking cessation program that will be right for you. We will work in consultation with your physician and pharmacist to help you manage the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. There are medications and nicotine replacement therapies, such as gum or the patch, to help your body adjust to nicotine withdrawal.
Mindfulness techniques as well as techniques from cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) and motivational interviewing can also help you learn to make this important change and help you to stick with it. We also recognize that people sometimes worry that they will gain weight if they stop smoking cigarettes. Our treatment program for smoking cessation includes advice on exercise and nutrition so fear of weight gain does not have to stop you from being able to quit smoking.
